UX for Virtual Reality

Virtual reality experiences are computer-generated simulations of a 3D environment. They are about creating environments where users feel mentally, emotionally, and physically engaged.

Virtual reality is a tool that can enhance various experiences across industries. For example, VR can be used for workforce training, gaming, healthcare, and more. Various levels of immersion can exist within VR, from full immersion to semi immersion to non immersion. In full immersion, the immersant sees a fully digital world in a headset. In semi immersion, the immersant may be wearing a headset but using pass through to also view their physical environment. And in non immersive experiences, a user may be playing a video game.

Questions to consider when creating a VR experience:

  • How do people naturally move and interact in 3D space?

  • How to make people feel comfortable while in virtual reality in an experience?

  • How to create a sense of engagement without overwhelming the user?

  • What helps users feel present and in full control?

  • How to guide attention and make interactions intuitive?

  • How to make these spaces accessible for all kinds of users?
